supermodernity
Friday, December 23rd, 2005For most people living in the urban life of the 21st century, the word “log in” would bring a conotation further than their literal meaning. Any website which are commercially driven and so designed to capture as many viewers as possible, require its viewers to log in at some point to gain a certain level of service. Some websites even require identity authorization on the very first page. This is one characteristic of online community website.
Clicking “log in” on an online community webpage has brought me into a specific realm in which I have to follow a set of rules in order to be able to embark on my journey. In many ways, it is like entering an airport, a non-place, in the language of Augé; “If a place can be identified as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which can not be defined as relational, or historical or concerned with identity will be a non-place.” (1995: 77-78)
Arrrggghh.. Nuff with theories!
Now, time for a clear cut example of supermodernity: Characters in this engaging drama of women and thier families living on
are so well developed. Even their clothes are meticulously selected to reflect who they are. An interview clip with its fashion stylist showed how much thoughts and consideration has been put in developing the costume, set and all nitty gritty details! If you were to choose amongst Susan, Gabrielle, Lynette, Bre, or Edie , which one do you want to be?
