depressed kind of monster

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

MetalOne hundred and forty minutes watching 3 rather-fat old men struggling to get out from their depression, I’m quite surprised that I dont get depressed my self. Linear story telling of how Metallica getting their feet back on the ground after some trouble some years can be interesting, even for a non-fan like me.

My favorite part was when Lars Ulrich realised that suing Napster actually backfired them! Maybe because it happened no so long ago, and I followed the story at some point. Joe Berlinger did a good job in keeping the balance among the time spent in their studio, their psychotherapy sessions, and footages from concert. A bit too much of Lars. More personal life of Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield could have been interesting. Enjoyable tho!

is meeting people easy?

Friday, March 3rd, 2006

Meeting_people_1Damn! A nicely depressing ‘rockumentary’, that is.

"Meeting people is easy" perfectly depicts radiohead, particularly the moments when they were on the top of the world after OK Computer won the grammy. I can’t get enough of the opening scene… It was just brilliant! Overall it is very touching… I’m not a big fan of radiohead but somehow I was carried away into their heads. Looking at the grumpy Thom Yorke complaining about them being famous painted a bitter smile on my face.

"This film contains stroboscopic effects that may adversely affect epilepsy sufferers." Yeaaah… you may even expect to get epilepsic after watching this film!! So, watch at your peril  >:-)

dig a gig

Dig "If it’s good, it’s fun. If it’s bad, it’s funny."

That’s how a band should perform! Simple yet got it all. And that was how the Brian Jonestown Massacre should handle their gigs. The Sun said this documentary is "a must-see". Hell yes, for the Dandy Warhols’ and the BJM’s fans. But not for a wider audience I suppose. Great documentary that tells loads of thing about those bands doesn’t always mean enjoyable to watch. Things got boring in the middle. Unless you’re a huge fan of the the Dandy Warhols & BJM, you really don’t want to see close ups of Courtney Taylor and Anton Newcombe talking about themselves for 107 minutes!

delicious breakfast

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

How would you define delicious breakfast? Is it something that makes you go ‘uummm…’, something that make you alive and kicking, make you smile, laugh and cry at the same time? Well, then go to Pluto, meet Patrick "Kitten" Braden and let him (or her?) give you all those.Pluto

Very touching story, dark, bitter and painful but told in a colorful setting and gleeful manner. Life must have been very though for Patrick, a cross dresser foster boy. He learnt from a very young age that his unusual habit might lead to pain and shame. Yet, he takes everything lightly and manage to conceal his bitterness behind his sweet smile and kittenic look. Cillian Murphy is really well casted! He’s amazing in the part which he eventually left his small town in Ireland and ended up being a cabaret singer in London. Overall, apart from the ‘chapter x’ titling which I found very annoying, this film is not to be missed.
